Rio Dulce

Left Antigua at 4am, arrived at Rio Dulce 9 hrs later at 1pm by private minibus plus a short boat ride. As we were warned, the traffic was horrendous, and it would have been a lot worse if we had left later. A lot of stops for traffic and construction, including being stuck in one queue for about 1 hr and 40 min because they only opened the road once every half hour.
Our one night here is at a beautiful jungle lodge Hacienda Tijax on Rio Dulce. First had a fish lunch, then went on a short hike to a suspension bridge and lookout point, topped off with a swim and relaxation at the pool.
Dinner was a short 2 min boat ride away at Sun Dog Cafe, I had a pizza. The next morning, some of us woke up early for a "sunrise" kayak on the Rio Dulce. It ended up raining on us for most of our kayak. But we still got to see lots of birds and hear howler monkeys in the mangrove forests. Then on our way back across the river we saw two manatees!
